HIV antigen test: HIV p24 antigen test tests for the HIV p24 antigen which is released very early after HIV infection.

The HIV p24 antigen appears in early infection, before the appearance of HIV antibodies. But later declines when the HIV antibodies begin to appear.

Very soon after HIV infection, the p24 antigen is produced. However it’s presence in the blood is rather transient, as it disappears quite soon, as the antibodies are produced.

The HIV antigen test is part of the 4th generation HIV ELISA test, which tests for both the HIV antigen as well as the HIV antibody. Testing for the HIV antigen allows the HIV window period to be brought down to 28 days after infection.
