Hepatitis B infection is caused by the Hepatitis B virus and is usually screened for by detecting HBsAg in the blood. Immunity may be discerned by detecting HBsAb, and if absent, the Hepatitis B vaccine or Twinrix® vaccine may be given.
- The hepatitis B virus is 100 times more infectious than HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and infects about 10 times more people than HIV worldwide.
- Hepatitis B virus infects the liver, and more than 350 million people in the world are lifelong hepatitis B virus carriers.
- Long-term hepatitis B virus infection causes at least one million premature deaths every year from cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. It is second only to tobacco as the leading cause of cancer in humans.
- Among the Hepatitis B carriers, 25% will develop serious liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
- The hepatitis B virus can be passed from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth, 1 in 20 Singaporeans are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus.

Latest NewsWhy Aren't More Parents Vaccinating Their Kids Against Cancer?

If there were a vaccine that could protect your 11-year-old son from getting cancer as an adult, you’d make sure he got it, right? As it turns out, this immunization exists, but a majority of young boys are not adequately protected, as journalist Jane Brody noted in The New York Times on Tuesday. The human papillomavirus vaccine ― which protects against HPV-associated cancers including throat and tongue, cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, and penile cancers ― is strongly recommended as cancer prevention for 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls by the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. The bad news: Just 22 percent of boys ages 13-17 had undergone the recommended three-dose HPV vaccine course for maximum cancer protection in 2014, and only 42 percent of boys had...
Hepatitis A Outbreak Linked To Popular Hawaii Sushi Chain
Mon, 22 Aug 2016 22:11:01 +0800 | Science - The Huffington Post
Hawaii is experiencing one of the largest hepatitis A outbreaks the United States has seen in the last decade, with 206 confirmed cases, including 51 that required hospitalization, since the outbreak started in June. State officials used an online population survey to find the source of the outbreak, announcing last week that frozen scallops served raw at Genki Sushi, a popular conveyor belt sushi chain, were likely the source. The FDA later confirmed that scallops infected with the hepatitis A virus were imported from the Philippines and served at the restaurants. The state has since embargoed the scallops, shut down 11 Genki Sushi locations across the islands of Oahu and Kauai, and asked the restaurants to get rid of all their food supplies and si...

Hawaii pharmacies are getting a windfall from the hepatitis A outbreak as customers rush to get vaccinated against the virus-borne ailment that state health officials have traced back to tainted seafood served at a sushi chain. At the Safeway pharmacy on Kapahulu Avenue, for example, pharmacists typically vaccinate about 10 people a week for hepatitis A. Most are travelers heading to exotic locations in China, Vietnam or Africa. Now the four Safeway pharmacies on Oahu are vaccinating more than… (Source: bizjournals.com Health Care:Pharmaceuticals headlines)

Obama Shifts Cash To Fight Zika; Vacationing Republicans Take Credit
Fri, 12 Aug 2016 05:01:06 +0800 | Healthy Living - The Huffington Post
WASHINGTON ― President Barack Obama’s administration announced Thursday the transfer of some $80 million in additional funds to combat the growing Zika threat after Congress refused to pass a $1.9 billion package before going on a seven-week break. Nevertheless, congressional Republicans took credit for convincing the White House to act when Congress would not. “For over six months we have been calling on the administration to use every existing resource at their disposal to address this crisis,” Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, said in a statement. “Our calls have been met with little action, while the White House continues to cast aspersions and blame at others for lack of funding.” The White House asked for $1.9 bil...
7 Infections Athletes Could Get From Rio's Contaminated Waters

By: Rachael Rettner, Senior Writer Published: 08/03/2016 06:02 PM EDT on LiveScience The coastal waters around Rio de Janeiro, where many Olympic water competitions will soon take place, are reportedly teeming with harmful viruses and bacteria. So what illnesses might people catch if they swallow some of the water? If the water has been contaminated with raw sewage, as has been reported, then a number of common pathogens could be lurking there and make people ill, experts say. “There are many types of microbes in raw sewage that have the potential to cause human disease,” said Stephen Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City.
