The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody test detects the presence of antibodies which are produced by the human body, in response to a HIV infection.
After a person is infected with HIV, over a period of time, the immune system responds by producing antibodies. These antibodies are present in the blood, saliva, and urine. The antibodies are detected by the HIV antibody test.
Initially, IgM antibodies are produced, then they start to decline. The decline in IgM antibody production overlaps with the onset of IgG antibody production. The IgG antibodies persists for great lengths of time.
- HIV screening test
- HIV window period is 90 days.
HIV positive individuals on HIV treatment for great lengths of time, may find their IgG antibodies declining to low or undetectable levels. This is due to the absence of HIV in the blood resulting from the HIV treatment.
