Androgenetic alopecia (AGA), also known as androgenic alopecia, male pattern baldness (MPB), male-pattern hair loss (MPHL), male hair loss, is caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is converted from testosterone by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase.
To reduce the amount of DHT, the enzyme catalyzing the conversion, 5-alpha reductase, can be inhibited by medications known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), also known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blockers. With less conversion of testosterone to DHT, and the ensuing reduction in the level of DHT, there would consequently be more hair growth.
Examples of 5-ARI medications available are finasteride, and dutasteride.
Another method to prevent hair loss is the use of the topical medication minoxidil. The mechanism of action has not been clearly defined, but it is proven to work, and is an established and well-accepted medication.
