Sexually transmitted disease (STD) symptoms differ between men and women. They happen when a sexually transmitted infection (STI) becomes symptomatic. Therefore, no symptoms don’t mean that there is no infection.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) symptoms are features of a disease that is apparent to a person who has been infected with an STD.

STD symptoms that occur frequently are:

  • Painful urination and discharge from the genitalia.
  • Multiple painful genital blisters and multiple painful genital ulcers with painful inguinal lymph nodes.
  • Single painless genital ulcer.
  • Fleshy cauliflower genital growths.
  • Fever and generalized rash.

Painful urination and discharge from the genitals are symptoms of gonorrhoea and chlamydia.

  • For gonorrhea, they usually occur 1 day to 2 weeks after infection.
  • For chlamydia, they usually occur 1 to 3 weeks after infection.

Multiple painful genital blisters which burst to form multiple painful genital ulcers are usually symptoms of genital herpes which is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). They occur 1 day to 2 weeks after infection.

Single painless genital ulcer is usually a symptom of syphilis. It occurs 9 to 90 days after infection.

Fleshy cauliflower genital growths are usually genital warts which is usually caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They occur three to six months after infection.

Fever and generalized rash are usually caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. They occur 2 to 4 week after infection.

No symptoms do not mean there is no infection, as STD symptoms occur in only a proportion of infected individuals. Therefore, not having any symptoms does not mean that there is no infection. The only way to be certain is to get STD Testing done.
