Toxicity with radiotherapy for oral cancers and its management: A practical approach
Tue, 24 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics
Trinanjan Basu, Sarbani G Laskar, Tejpal Gupta, Ashwini Budrukkar, Vedang Murthy, Jai P AgarwalJournal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics 2012 8(6):72-84Radiotherapy-induced damage in the oral mucosa is the result of the deleterious effects of radiation, not only on the oral mucosa itself but also on the skin, adjacent salivary glands, bone, dentition, and masticatory apparatus. From basic skin care to dental and oral health maintenance, several ointments and lotions, oral and parenteral medications, biological response modifiers, cytoprotective drugs, newer radiation techniques and surgery have been introduced to combat and more importantly to prevent the development of these complications. Radiotherapy-induced oral complications involve complex and dynamic pathobiological processes. Thi...

Nanostructured Lipid Carriers Improve Skin Permeation and Chemical Stability of Idebenone.
Wed, 11 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | AAPS PharmSciTech
Authors: Li B, Ge ZQ Abstract Idebenone (IDB) is a synthetic antioxidant and analog of coenzyme Q10. The percutaneous permeation of IDB was investigated in guinea pig skin after application of different formulations. The enhancing effects of various formulations [nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs), nanoemulsion (NE), or oil solution] on the permeation of IDB were evaluated using ex vivo guinea pig skins. Furthermore, stability of different formulations and in which chemical stability of IDB was determined during storage. Permeation experiments revealed that formulations varied in their ability to enhance the skin permeation of IDB. For NLC formulation, the cumulative amount of IDB in the epidermis, dermis, and acceptor medium of diffusion cells was approximately threefold more th...

Successful treatment of melasma using a combination of microdermabrasion and Q‐switched Nd:YAG lasers
Tue, 03 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | Lasers in Surgery and Medicine
ConclusionMicrodermabrasion plus low‐fluence QS Nd:YAG laser treatment is a simple, non‐invasive procedure with minimal risk, no recovery time, and long‐lasting remission. Treatment works on all skin phototypes in just two to three treatment sessions. Subject compliance with skin care was excellent, probably due to the dramatic improvement observed within 4 weeks. Standardized Diaper Care Regimen: A Prospective, Randomized Pilot Study on Skin Barrier Function and Epidermal IL‐1α in Newborns
Sun, 01 Jan 2012 05:00:00 +0100 | Pediatric Dermatology
Abstract:  Adaptation of skin barrier function and interleukin‐1α (IL‐1α) content in diapered and nondiapered skin are poorly characterized in newborns receiving standard skin care. In a monocentric, prospective pilot study 44 healthy, full‐term neonates were randomly assigned to skin care with baby wipes (n = 21) or water‐moistened washcloth (n = 23) at each diaper change. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, skin‐pH, IL‐1α, and epidermal desquamation were measured on days 2, 14, and 28 postpartum. Microbiological colonization was evaluated at baseline and on day 28. Significantly lower TEWL was found on the buttock in the group using baby wipes compared to water. IL‐1α and skin hydration significantly increased and pH decreased independent of skin...
