Clot risk of contraceptive patch examined
Fri, 11 May 2012 17:55:00 +0100 | NHS News Feed
Conclusion
This large study provides valuable information on the rate of VTE that may be experienced among users of hormonal contraception.
However, the findings are not completely surprising. Oestrogen-containing hormonal contraceptives are already known to increase the risk of VTE, and medical professionals already consider this potential side effect when prescribing contraception and monitoring patients. Instead of revealing some new or major danger, this study provides a good indication of how the risks compare for a variety of different contraceptive methods.
The oestrogen-containing contraceptives currently available are the combined oral contraceptive ----, the transdermal patch (of which there is one licensed product – brand name Evra) and the vaginal ring (of which there is one...

The effect of lersivirine, a next-generation NNRTI, on the pharmacokinetics of midazolam and oral contraceptives in healthy subjects
Mon, 23 Apr 2012 13:03:10 +0100 | European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology
Conclusions These data further support previous observations that lersivirine is a weak CYP3A4 inducer, a weak inhibitor of glucuronidation,
and a P-glycoprotein inhibitor. In both studies, lersivirine appeared to have a good safety and tolerability profile.

Steroidal contraceptives: effect on carbohydrate metabolism in women without diabetes mellitus.
Sat, 21 Apr 2012 18:17:34 +0100 | Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
CONCLUSIONS: Current evidence suggests no major differences in carbohydrate metabolism between different hormonal contraceptives in women without diabetes. We cannot make strong statements due to having few studies that compared the same types of contraceptives. Many trials had small numbers of participants and some had large losses. Many of the earlier studies had limited reporting of methods. We still know very little about women at risk for metabolic problems due to being overweight. More than half of the trials had weight restrictions as inclusion criteria. Only one small trial stratified the groups by body mass index (obese versus normal).

Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System Versus Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy for the Treatment of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: A Randomized Study.

Conclusions: LNG-IUS can be considered as first option for the treatment of HMB unresponsive to drug therapy, and it is particularly suitable for women who want to preserve an acceptable menstrual flow. LSH may be considered the best surgical option in women with HMB unresponsive to any medical treatment.
