Hi, I’m 50 yrs old. In 2010 I had a pelvic floor lift due to leaking urine when I laughed, coughed and did star jumps at the gym! My gynae decided he would replace my mirena coil at the same time. On having my coil checked later it could not be found, so I had a scan which showed multiple fibroids, small but plenty of them. I was assured that the coil would keep them at bay!
A comparison of the effect of levonorgestrel IUD with oral medroxyprogesterone acetate on abnormal uterine bleeding with simple endometrial hyperplasia and fertility preservation.
Wed, 04 Dec 2013 00:10:02 +0100 | Clinical Breast Cancer
CONCLUSION: The results of this study show that LNG-IUD is more effective than MPA in treatment of simple endometrial hyperplasia and can be helpful in young women who want to preserve their fertilities.
Levonorgestrel‐impregnated intrauterine device as treatment for endometrial hyperplasia: a national multicentre randomised trial
Thu, 28 Nov 2013 05:00:00 +0100 | BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
ConclusionIn the first trial of its kind, women treated with the LNG‐IUS showed histologically normal endometrium after 6 months of therapy for endometrial hyperplasia. Cyclical progestogens are found to be less effective compared with continuous oral therapy and LNG‐IUS and should not be used for this purpose. Strategies to improve adherence and acceptability of hormonal methods of contraception.
Sat, 02 Nov 2013 15:00:04 +0100 | Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
CONCLUSIONS: Only three trials showed some benefit of strategies to improve adherence and continuation. However, several had small sample sizes and six had high losses to follow up. The overall quality of evidence was considered moderate. The intervention type and intensity varied greatly across the studies. A combination of intensive counseling and multiple contacts and reminders may be needed to improve adherence and acceptability of contraceptive use. High-quality RCTs with adequate power and well-designed interventions could help identify ways to improve adherence to, and continuation of, hormonal contraceptive methods.
[Comment] Next steps for research on hormonal contraception and HIV
Sat, 02 Nov 2013 04:00:00 +0100 | LANCET
Despite decades of observational research, uncertainty remains about whether use of hormonal contraception, especially the injectables depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) and norethisterone enanthate (NET-EN), increases a woman's risk of acquiring HIV. Because of concerns that the increased risk in observational studies is an artifact of confounding and selection bias, a randomised controlled trial has been proposed. One potential design includes four groups: DMPA, NET-EN, Jadelle implant, or a copper intrauterine device comparison group. (Source: LANCET)
Effect of depot medroxyprogesterone acetate on bone mineral density in adolescent women.
Fri, 01 Nov 2013 04:00:00 +0100 | Chinese Medical Journal
CONCLUSION: The evidence of our study suggested that the use of DMPA for short-term (≤12-month) has no significant effects on BMD at spine and femoral neck, but long-term exposure to DMPA may prevent the bone mass accrual in adolescents.
