Description
Candidiasis/candidosis/moniliasis/oidiomycosis or penile/vaginal/oral thrush is a fungal infection (mycosis) / yeast infection of any of the Candida species, of which Candida albicans is the most common. It is usually treated with Clotrimazole or Tioconazole pessaries in females, or Fluconazole capsules orally.

A major multidrug transporter, MDR1, belonging to the Major Facilitator Superfamily (MFS) invariably contributes to an increased efflux of commonly used azoles and thus corroborates their direct involvement in multidrug resistance (MDR) in Candida albicans. The MDR1 protein with two transmembrane domains, each comprising six transmembrane helices, is interconnected with extracellular loops and intracellular loops (ICLs). The introduction of deletions and insertions through mutagenesis was used to address the role of the largest inter-domain ICL3 of the Mdr1 protein. Most of the progressive deletants, when overexpressed, eliminated the drug resistance. Disruption of the ECM33 Gene in Candida albicans Prevents Biofilm Formation, Engineered Human Oral Mucosa Tissue Damage and Gingival Cell Necrosis/Apoptosis

In this study we demonstrated that ΔCaecm33 double mutant showed reduced biofilm formation and causes less damage to gingival mucosa tissues. This was confirmed by the reduced level of necrotic cells and Bax/Bcl2 gene expression as apoptotic markers. In contrast, parental and Caecm33 mutant strains decreased basement membrane protein production (laminin 5 and type IV collagen). We thus propose that ECM33 gene/protein represents a novel target for the prevention and treatment of infections caused by Candida. (Source: Experimental Diabetes Research)

Deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs) are an uncommon but serious complication after open-heart surgery. The reported incidence of DSWIs due to Candida albicans is 0.4%, but these infections have an extremely high mortality of 56%. We herein report a rare case of a 79-year old woman who suffered from Candidal DSWI after repeated open-heart surgeries. We treated her with negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT). This is the rare case report that provides evidence that NPWT is a safe and suitable technique for the management of Candidal DSWIs. (Source: Interactive CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery)

To establish infection, pathogens such as Candida albicans must mount effective stress responses to counter host defenses whilst adapting to dynamic changes in nutrient status within host niches. Studies of C. albicans stress adaptation have generally been performed on glucose‐grown cells, leaving the effects of alternative carbon sources upon stress resistance largely unexplored. We have shown that growth on alternative carbon sources, such as lactate, strongly influence the resistance of C. albicans to antifungal drugs, osmotic and cell wall stresses. Conclusions:More buccodental conditions and carotid intima‐media thickness increase appeared in the patients with HbA1c level > 8.5%, suggesting onset of atherosclerosis. Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis are able to form biofilms on virtually any biomaterial implanted in a human host. Biofilms are a primary cause of mortality
